The sound of the single and dual exhaust notes from those great engines should always be remembered and even when they are old and rusted just looking them over is like a trip down memory lane. Its hard to find any good project cars in the fields around here even though it wasn't always so. My fathers friends used to buy them up and modify them into circle track racers, the dirt track at our state fair was about as close to heaven as we could get back then with the smell of race gas and the loud modified engine sounds from the brightly colored cars - can't even remember the dust and grit that they must have kicked up into our faces. There were a lot more small circle tracks around here in the 50's and 60's and a great quantity of those old classics met their demise on them. Some of us used to race all the time drag-racing, circle track racing, street racing, on the way to work or school, or the grocery store and even just having fun on the weekends. We all enjoyed going to the drive-in with our shoebox chevys or my Nash Healy Metropolitan lowered with street slicks and mag wheels and the great flame paintjobs over the custom kandy apple candy burgandy house of kolor metalflake paint jobs, and lately the flat clear coated black retro rods with base clear flames. Idleing the engine for too long caused them to carbon up, so what better way to clean the engine out than to take it out for a great midnight romp down the road. Remember the glass packing from the hollywood mufflers blowing out of the dual exhaust straight pipes flying in the air glowing bright orange and flitting aroung like fireflys in the rear view mirror. I nearly forgot about the desoto firedomes, packard straight 8's, all the big tubs that were made like the nash, terrapin, hudson, airflow, streamliners, mayfair - I sleep now. Automotive restorations cheerfully performed. |
